A Study on Relationship between Cognitive Function and Physical Fitness of Rural Elderly People

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the interrelationship between cognitive function and physical fitness in rural elderly people based on cross-sectional study. The study used data obtained by interview and physical test from 2009 August to 2010 august, targeting a total of 494 that men is 276, women is 218 in 65 years old and over lived in Yangpyeong-gun. Cognitive function measured MMSE-K and divided impaired Cognitive function through 23 score standard. In order to analyze the interrelationship between physical fitness and cognitive function. we performed a logistic regression analysis to calculate odds ratio(OR) and 95% confidence interval(CI) after adjustments marital status, stroke, family history of stroke, hypertension diagnosis, arthritis. The levels of statistically significance were set at < 0.05. In the results, There were the positive associations in the cognitive function and muscle strength for the elderly men. the lowest group in upper strength and lower muscle strength was significantly high. We found that the elders who has lowest level of upper extremity strength was that the OR of man is 4.383(95% CI 1.268-15.149) and lowest leg muscle strength was that the OR of man is 8.709(95% CI 1.320-57.460). Flexibility and Cardiovascular fitness was not significant. This research results show a interrelationships between muscle strength in the physical fitness and cognitive function.
